Getting Traffic to Your New Website

Some people think that all you have to do is build a website and people will just start flocking to it in droves. If you just sit back and wait for people to come to your website, then you will be waiting a long time. If you have good content on your webpages, then the search engines may eventually find your website and you may get a few people to come through the search engines. This will take a long time.

To help the process you could submit your website URL to the search engines, but this could take weeks to occur. The best way to get seen by the search engines is start while you are designing your website. You need to make sure your website is search engine friendly and that your webpages are Search Engine Optimized. You may have heard the term or seen the acronym SEO, but do you know what that means or how to make your webpages SEO?

Go to www.google.com and do a search for anything. The results of the search are displayed in the order that Google selects based on some key features of your webpage. Google only looks at one page at a time and considers how many times words are repeated on your webpage. The more times a word or phrase is repeated on your webpage is part of the equation to figure out how relevant your webpage is to the search terms that a visitor may use to find information.

Before you create your webpage, you need to determine which keyword or keyphrase you want your webpage to appear in the results page. The keyword or keyphrase needs to be relevant to the product or service you are selling on the webpage. Then you want the target keyword or keyphrase to be in the Title of the webpage, in the URL of the webpage, in the contents of the webpage, and in the footer of the webpage. The target keyword or keyphrase needs to be repeated in the content of the webpage a number of times based on the total number of words on the webpage. This is called the keyword density and is a ratio of the total number of words divided by the number of times the keyword or keyphrase is repeated.

Another factor the search engines look at is the number of links there are in their database that point to your webpage from another website. These are called linkbacks. The goal is to get a linkback from a higher ranking website with content that is relevant to your webpage. You also want to use the target keyword or keyphrase as anchor text for the link back, this is the same target keyword or keyphrase for the webpage you want linked to.

You also need to have links within your website that link from one webpage to another webpage with relevant content and using the target keyword and keyphrase for the webpage. By doing these things you increase your ranking with the search engines and increase your position in the search results pages. The goal is to be listed on the first page of the search results and near the top. #1 is best of course.

This will bring people to your webpage when they do a search for the target keyword or keyphrase. This is called organic search engine traffic. There is also a paid advertising method called Pay Per Click or PPC for short. Do not attempt to use PPC if you have not set up your webpage for SEO, because you will pay a lot of money for one click and the clicks add up fast. Google AdWords uses your page ranking to determine how much you will pay per click.

The information considered so far, helps you to see that getting traffic to your website starts before you even create your first webpage. If you have already created a website, then all is not lost. Make sure that all webpages that you add to your website are SEO. Make changes to your existing webpages to make them SEO.
